Hair loss overview

Hair loss / hair fall is something which one has to face at some or other point in life. Hair loss in men and women can manifest in various forms. in both men and women some level of a fall is normal but beyond a certain level hair fall of any level is alarming.

How much hair loss / hair fall is normal ?

well while talking about the amount of daily hair fall there are certain myths. Traditionally it has been taught that up 200 hair follicles lost a day is absolutely normal and there is nothing to worry about that. But with time and with our experience I have a different concept of dealing with hair fall. I’ll say it in one line “that any amount of hair fall which is more than your normal is alarming”. you should not wait for more than a hundred hair follicles to count in a day and then visit a trichologist or hair surgeon. Rather one should be very aware of the normal level of hair fall which one is suffering normally, say that beyond 20 years of age one should be very aware of the normal hair fall during head wash oiling shampoo on the pillow and so on. For example, after twenty years of age, someone is getting a hair fall of approximately 10 hairs per wash then anything beyond normal hair fall + 20% is alarming . in this particular case if hair fall is around 14 to 15 then it’s the time to see your trichologist.

what are the reasons for hair fall / hair loss ?

In men hair fall can be due to different reasons as compared to the females but there are few common things between both men and women and I’ll cover that part first.

Telogen effluvium: This is an entity that is common Both men and women and the reason behind telogen effluvium is the same or almost the same in both genders. Telogen effluvium basically is an increased turnover rate of the hair follicles.  The Hair cycle from anagen to telogen and then from telogen to anagen this whole cycle speeds up. Telogen effluvium and the most common reason behind telogen effluvium is stress full stop this stress can be physical stress or emotional stress. physical stress like trauma injury any major surgical procedure chemotherapy etc. and emotional stress can be due to Deep brief mental stress may be due to examination interviews any life situation and so on. In both the genders, this is a self-limiting condition and in most cases, no treatment is required. I believe in treating telogen effluvium in a Holistic manner with the help of meditation and medication. medication which routinely I follow is In form of little high doses of multivitamins little more than the recommended daily allowance. meditation can be in any form or purpose is to calm the mind for a period of 10 to 15 minutes over a period of 8 to 10 hours so two sessions of meditation can do a miracle in people suffering from telogen effluvium. offending reason of course is to be dealt with appropriately.

Nutritional deficiency:

Nutritional deficiency in form of less intake of certain vital elements like biotin Vitamin D3 iron calcium pantothenate vitamin A etc.People who are in i.t sector or marketing people who have to travel frequently, in this group of people we have seen that if right dose and the right amount of multivitamins are started then the responses very quick and long-lasting.

You must have seen in general life that changes in water does lead to hair fall. But we have done studies at our Institute and seen that water has definitely a role to play in hair fall. Although we are unable to make any kind of correlation for a different group of people regarding the type of water which suits them best but still, we are able to mark up at least a few things

Places, where TDS or total dissolved salt in water is more than 800, chances of hair fall are much more as compared to Areas where the water is of soft quality and TDS, is below 200. as a general rule higher dissolved chlorine has a damaging effect on the scalp PH and it leads to easy uprooting of hair and more hair fall is noticed.

Alopecias: Different types of alopecia is noticed in both genders to name few there can be alopecia areata, scarring alopecia, alopecia totalis and many more. you need to visit your nearest Dermatologist or trichologist to get precise diagnosis regarding the type of alopecia you are suffering from

Apart from These common reasons, there are reasons which are specific to gender

Men hair loss / hair fall

hair loss / hair fall in men

As far as men are concerned, apart from the reasons listed above androgenetic alopecia is much more common in men as compared to women. offending reason being more sensitive to circulating testosterone. Either higher circulating levels of testosterone or more sensitivity of DHT receptors to normally circulating testosterone leads to the weakening of hair roots in the scalp. as distribution of DHT receptors is in a particular pattern on the scalp, so androgenetic alopecia is also sometimes referred to as pattern baldness.

medical treatment of androgenetic alopecia primarily involves measures which improve the blood supply of the scalp, more than usual levels of multivitamins and multimineral and DHT blockers in the form of finasteride and dutasteride.

if damage has already occurred due to male pattern baldness, then and the only hope to get normal density and coverage of hair back is with the hair transplant.

women hair loss :

hair loss / hair fall in women

In women in addition to the above-listed reasons there are are few conditions with afflicting females more as compared to males.

Female pattern baldness is typically seen on the female scalp in genetically predisposed individuals. there can be diffuse loss of hair in an inverted Ferntree pattern or there can be generalized hair loss on top of the scalp in an oval shape. Female pattern baldness is typical because of the universally present frontal hairline. Damage in female pattern hair loss is on the top of the head.

Postpartum hair loss:

Due to changes in hormonal during and after childbirth, there is the sudden withdrawal of circulating progesterone leading to an alteration in circulating testosterone levels. this can sometimes lead to Postpartum hair fall which is noticed in up to 40% of the Asian females. this is a self-limiting condition and except for Vitamin D3 in most of the cases, nothing else would be required. but still, if the condition persists beyond 3 months then and your trichologist order mythologist should be consulted for the same.

Androgenetic alopecia of the females: even in females there can be the presentation of androgenetic alopecia and the pattern of hair loss mimics as like in men. there is the bilateral temporal loss of hair and the hairline looks more like men.
