Female hair loss

Stress has become a major cause of hair loss in females. More and more females working women in particular are reporting to the hospitals .The over demanding jobs, long working hours and expectations from family pile up the stress in females and results in massive hair loss that is in no way Female Pattern Hair Loss. Generally females start noticing hair loss during morning shower, while hair are blown to dry, or when given a quick brush—and most females think that’s normal.
A couple of hairs are lost on an average a day. That’s just hair going through its cycles, and there will be a new one to replace it.” However, if the loss is around fifty to hundred hairs per day, that should be taken as an alarm.
Hair loss may be a sign of a more serious medical condition that needs an evaluation by a trichologist for a possible treatment.
Commonly known in females, is Telogen effluvium, a phenomenon that occurs after pregnancy, major surgery, drastic weight loss or extreme stress in which females shed large amounts of hair every day, usually when shampooing, styling, or brushing. However, the stress is being seen as major reason behind hair loss in females. Young females are equally prone to this phenomenon.
During telogen effluvium, hair shifts faster than normal from its growing phase into the “resting” phase before moving quickly into the shedding, or telogen, phase.
According to women with telogen effluvium, they typically notice hair loss 6 weeks to 3 months after a stressful event. At its peak, some may lose handfuls of hair.
A proper care along with right medicines, multivitamins are required to treat this phase. A very recent development known as ‘LLLT’ (Low Light Laser Therapy) has also hit the market. Developed in USA, the therapy is based on  laser beams that penetrates through the layers of skin and reaches the follicular region of hair. It stimulates vascular supply to the roots of the hair and also reinstates the follicular grip in the dermal area, thus strengthening the hair base and ceasing hair loss.

How many grafts are required in hair transplant.

Grafts requirement can be calculated by first calculating the area to be coverd in square centimetres. simply put a transparent sheet of plastic paper on bald area mark the area to be transplated with a marker. Now simply make squares with side 1 cm  with a ruler and count these squares. This is total area of baldness in square centimetres.

Calculate grafts by multiply ing this area with

15 to 20 for a light to moderate density.

20 to 25 for moderate to mild  heavy density.

35 to 60 for a very high density.

Approximately 1500 to 2000 grafts are needed in front one third area for a good density.

2000 to 2500 grafts are needed upto middle half of head.

2500 to 3500 for upto crown and

4000 to 5000 for covering whole head in moderate to mild high density.

Time to final results after hair transplant.

After hair transplant the very next day we see small scabs all over the transplanted area. These scabs are dead skin tags which accompany extracted grafts.Normally these scabs fall off in almost 5 days .we can see small hair after scabs are completely off.Transplanted hair keep growing after that for almost 3 weeks.we can see small hair all over the transplanted area. This is the first glimpse or view of final result. Hair start shedding afyer 3 weeks and varying from person to person there can be shedding of almost 80 percent of  hair from ttransplanted area. But hair which are left after 4 weeks keep growing. Final growth starts at 4 months and can mature in another 2 to 3 months. Invariably at the end of 1 yr we get a full look after hair transplant.

FUE VS FUT

Fut vs fue.

This is an ever controversial topic of discussion among hair transplant surgeons that which technique is better fue or fut.

As far as my views are concerned, we have 2 point of views to look at this controversy. From surgeon’s point of view, and from client or patient point of view.

As a surgeon I feel much comfortable with fut because I have a limited job to do. First is strip excision and second is making sites for inserting grafts. Rest of the things are taken care of by technical staff. So I ncan do more than one surgery in a day.

When I talk about doing fue, its much tiring for me. As I have to do take out grafts myself than I Have to make recipient sites.so almost 70 percent of the time and work is done by me.

From patients point of view..fut is much uncomfortable as pain in stitches remain for few days. Than if we use non absorbable stitches. They need to be removed after few days. Third is that client cannot wear small hair as this makes scar area prominent. As far as fue is concerned during surgery it is more tiring as compared to fut .time involved is almost double as compared to fue. But in post op period there is negligible pain and donor area heals within 2 to 3 days. Still in region where I practice we do 100 percent fue procedure.
